A rash guard is protective equipment that happens to carry a logo.

Why we exist

Rash guard programmes keep failing in the same three ways: guards that chafe because a decorated seam crosses a wear zone, UPF claims that quietly assume the fabric is never stretched, and prints that peel after a month of salt or mats.

None of those are printing problems. They are specification problems, and they are all avoidable at the quote stage — which is where we do our work.

The seam is the product

The garment exists to prevent abrasion, and a raised seam in a wear zone recreates exactly the problem it was bought to solve.

So every guard is flatlocked, and the seams are routed away from chest, shoulder and underarm contact — the places a board, a mat or a paddling motion actually rubs. That routing is also why sponsor marks get moved off the underarm even when the artwork file puts them there.

UPF, quoted the way it is worn

Sun protection comes from weave density. Stretch the fabric over a paddling back and the weave opens; soak it and it changes again.

So we quote the tested rating and state how it was tested, we specify fabric that holds its rating stretched and wet, and we say plainly that a thin pale guard is not UPF50 because a swing tag says so. On kids’ programmes we go further and advise high-visibility colours, because there is published water-visibility testing and dark guards disappear in a pool.

The print is in the fibre

Salt, chlorine, board wax and mat friction strip anything that sits on a fabric’s surface. Dye sublimation puts the colour in the fibre itself, which is why an all-over print can survive a season of any of them.

The honest limit comes with it: sublimation needs a light synthetic base. A solid black garment constrains what can be printed, and we say that before the order rather than after the proof.

Fit is a use question

Compression and relaxed are not style choices. A grappling guard is compression cut with a longer hem because a loose guard rides up and gives an opponent grip; a surf-school guard is relaxed because it goes over a wetsuit-warm body in a hurry; a kids’ guard has to go over a head without a wrestle.

We ask what the guard is for before we ask how many, and compression sizing is quoted by chest measurement because it runs snug.

Honest about what it is not

A rash guard adds no meaningful warmth — it is not a wetsuit and we will not describe it as one. Chlorine eats elastane, so a standard guard in a daily pool programme goes baggy in a season; pool-heavy fleets get chlorine-resistant fabric and the price difference explained.

And no garment protects the face and hands. We sell coverage, not invincibility, and the difference matters most for the employers who buy long sleeves as sun safety equipment.
