UPF Ratings: What the Number Actually Promises

UPF is a real, tested measurement — and the way it gets quoted has quietly drifted a long way from the way garments get worn.

Where protection comes from

Weave density, mostly. Fibre type and colour help, but the weave does the work.

That is why the same rating means different things on different fabrics.

What stretch does

Fabric stretched over shoulders opens the weave — exactly where the sun lands on a paddler.

Ask whether the rating holds stretched. If the supplier does not know, the answer is no.

What water does

Wet fabric changes rating again, and a rash guard spends its life wet.

A specification worth paying for states the rating stretched AND wet.

What no garment does

Faces, ears and hands are not covered by any rash guard.

Coverage plus sunscreen on the rest is the honest strategy, and we say so on every staff-kit quote.
